We launched our Reconciliation Action Plan

    PEOPLE

We are embracing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people's histories and their present-day needs in our communities.

Scentre Group launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) during NAIDOC week, an important step on our journey to create a workplace reflective of the communities in which we operate.

    Appreciation, respect and understanding

Many of our centres are located in geographical areas of cultural significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We believe it is our responsibility to understand and embrace the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and rights, and seek to increase appreciation, respect and understanding of our shared environments among the broader community.

Our RAP, which has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, challenges us to re-examine what it means to be such an important part of the social and economic fabric of so many communities. It outlines our commitments and measurable targets as we embark on our reconciliation journey over the next two years. We will review the RAP and its commitments in 2018.

“It is a major part of our Diversity and Inclusion plan to create sustainable, meaningful change for our own people and the communities in which we operate through our initiatives.”

    – Ian Irving, Director Design and Construction and Chair of Scentre Group’s D&I Council.

    The launch

To launch the RAP, we embraced the amazing skills of our resident Aboriginal artist, Mark Kilpatrick (Forklift Operator at Miranda). Mark spent three months creating a large-scale artwork that encapsulates his vision for Scentre Group. Mark’s beautiful artwork is now permanently installed in our corporate support office in Sydney and features as a digitised version in our RAP.

“It’s a modern-day corroboree,” says Mark Kilpatrick, Indigenous Artist and Forklift Operator at Westfield Miranda.

“The painting is a representation of our business; a place where family and friends come to meet, have coffee and shop. It’s a modern-day corroboree.”

    Acknowledgement of Country

We are steadily installing and unveiling Acknowledgement of Country plaques at Westfield Concierges and Centre Management offices to pay respect to the cultural significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our communities.
